A Direct-On-Line (DOL) starter is a type of motor starter used to control and start electric motors. It is one of the simplest and most common methods for motor starting, particularly for three-phase induction motors. DOL starters provide a direct connection between the motor and the power supply, resulting in full voltage being applied to the motor terminals during starting. Here are some key features and considerations related to DOL starters:

Purpose: DOL starters are primarily used to start electric motors, typically in industrial and commercial applications. They provide full voltage to the motor terminals at the moment of starting, allowing the motor to accelerate rapidly to its operating speed.
Operation: The DOL starter consists of a contactor (a heavy-duty relay), overload protection (usually in the form of thermal overload relays), and a start button. When the start button is pressed, the contactor closes, connecting the motor to the power supply. The motor receives full voltage, initiating its rotation. Overload protection helps prevent overheating and damage to the motor by monitoring the motor’s current draw.
Advantages:
- Simplicity: DOL starters are simple to design and operate.
- Cost-Effective: They are cost-effective and suitable for many applications.
- Suitable for High Inertia Loads: DOL starters are effective for starting motors with high-inertia loads.
Limitations:
- Inrush Current: DOL starters can result in a high inrush current, which may cause voltage dips and stress on the electrical system during motor starting.
- Mechanical Stress: The abrupt start can cause mechanical stress on the motor and connected equipment.
- Not Suitable for All Motors: DOL starters are not suitable for motors with high torque requirements, sensitive equipment, or applications where soft starting and reduced current during starting are essential.
Overload Protection: DOL starters incorporate overload protection to safeguard the motor against excessive current. This protection helps prevent motor damage due to overloads or faults.
Manual Control: DOL starters are often manually controlled, meaning an operator initiates the motor start by pressing a button or switch. Manual control allows for direct intervention and monitoring.
Safety: Safety considerations, such as emergency stop buttons and safety interlocks, are important when using DOL starters to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
Wiring and Installation: The wiring and installation of DOL starters should adhere to electrical regulations and standards, including BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations), to ensure electrical safety and compliance.

While DOL starters are straightforward and widely used, they may not be suitable for all motor applications. In situations where a soft start, reduced inrush current, or more precise control is required, alternative motor starting methods, such as soft starters or variable frequency drives (VFDs), may be more appropriate. The choice of motor starting method depends on the specific requirements of the application and the equipment involved.
