Key Types of RCBOs

  1. Single Pole RCBO:
Protects a single live phase while detecting earth leakage. It is widely used for residential circuits such as lighting, sockets, or individual appliances, fitting seamlessly into consumer units or distribution boards.
  2. Double Pole RCBO:
Protects both live and neutral conductors while detecting earth leakage. Commonly used in single-phase circuits that require neutral disconnection, such as outdoor power supplies, HVAC systems, or caravans. It enhances safety by isolating both conductors during faults.
  3. Three-Pole RCBO:
Designed to protect three-phase circuits in commercial and industrial systems. These RCBOs are ideal for motor controls, machinery, and large-scale electrical systems.
  4. Bi-Directional RCBO:
Bi-directional RCBOs provide protection against residual currents and overcurrents flowing in either direction. They are essential in circuits with multiple power sources, such as solar PV systems, battery storage, and EV chargers. These devices ensure fault detection regardless of current flow direction, offering enhanced safety in renewable energy setups.

Type A RCBOs and Why They Are Superior
  • Type A RCBO:
Detects both standard AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents. Type A is highly recommended for modern circuits with electronic devices such as LED lighting, computers, EV chargers, and appliances with variable-speed drives.
  • Type AC RCBO:
Detects only standard AC residual currents. However, Type AC has become obsolete due to its inability to handle DC components that may saturate the device, reducing its effectiveness. Modern installations should always use Type A for enhanced safety and compliance with evolving standards.

Tripping Curves

RCBOs are available with specific tripping curves, each designed to handle different load characteristics:

  • Curve B:
Suitable for circuits with purely resistive loads, such as lighting or heating, where minimal inrush current is expected.
  • Curve C:
Designed for circuits with moderate inrush currents, such as those involving fluorescent lighting or small motors. This makes Curve C ideal for most commercial and industrial applications.

Key Features
  • Comprehensive Protection:
Combines overload, short circuit, and residual current protection in one device.
  • 30mA Sensitivity:
All RCBOs in this category are rated at 30mA, ensuring effective protection against earth leakage faults for personal and equipment safety.
  • Current Ratings:
Available in a range of amperages, from 6A to 50A, making them suitable for various circuit loads.
  • Bi-Directional Functionality:
Ensures protection in circuits where current flow can reverse, such as renewable energy setups or EV chargers.
  • Compact Design:
Space-saving construction allows for easy integration into consumer units and distribution boards.
  • Standards Compliance:
Conforms to IEC 61009-1 and BS EN 61009, ensuring safety and reliability.

Applications
  • Residential Circuits:
Provides safety for individual circuits such as lighting, power sockets, and kitchen appliances.
  • Commercial Installations:
Protects essential systems such as HVAC, elevators, and lighting in offices, retail spaces, and schools.
  • Industrial Systems:
Ensures the safety of machinery, motor controls, and high-load circuits in factories and warehouses.
  • Renewable Energy Systems:
Ideal for solar PV arrays, battery storage systems, and EV chargers, particularly with bi-directional functionality.

Benefits of RCBOs
  • Enhanced Safety:
Protects against both overcurrent and residual current faults, minimizing fire risks and electric shock hazards.
  • Improved Circuit Isolation:
Isolates faulty circuits without disrupting power to the rest of the system, reducing downtime and inconvenience.
  • Future-Proofing:
Type A RCBOs and bi-directional functionality ensure compatibility with modern electrical systems and renewable energy setups.
  • Compliance with Standards:
Fully adheres to international safety standards, ensuring reliability and durability.

RCBOs are indispensable in modern electrical installations, offering unmatched safety, reliability, and versatility. Explore our range of single pole, double pole, three-pole, and bi-directional RCBOs to find the ideal solution for your needs. With options like Type A RCBOs and Curve B or C tripping profiles, you can ensure superior protection for any application.
