Dedicated Consumer Units for Heat Pump Installations

Modern heat pump systems commonly use inverter-driven compressors and electronic control equipment. These systems can generate complex residual currents, meaning standard protection devices may not always be suitable.

Heat Pump Consumer Units fitted with Type B, Type B HP or Type F RCD protection are designed to support renewable heating systems where enhanced residual current detection is required. Installing a dedicated board provides clear circuit separation, structured protection and simplified maintenance.

RCD Protection for Inverter-Driven Heat Pumps

Inverter-based heat pumps can produce AC, pulsating DC and, in certain fault conditions, smooth DC residual currents. For this reason, some manufacturers specify advanced RCD types.

Type B RCD

Detects AC, pulsating DC and smooth DC residual currents. Suitable for applications where DC leakage may be present.

Type B HP RCD

Designed specifically for heat pump applications, offering characteristics tailored to inverter-driven renewable heating systems.

Type F RCD

Provides enhanced protection compared to standard devices and is suitable for certain single-phase inverter loads.

Always refer to the heat pump manufacturer’s installation instructions to confirm the correct RCD type for the system.

Installation Considerations

When selecting a heat pump consumer unit, installers should assess:

  • System load requirements

  • Supply type (single phase or three phase)

  • Manufacturer-specified RCD type

  • Circuit design and isolation requirements

  • Allowance for future system expansion

Using a dedicated consumer unit with the correct RCD configuration supports safe operation, regulatory compliance and long-term system reliability.

FAQs

Do all heat pumps require Type B protection?
Not necessarily. Some systems specify Type B, Type B HP or Type F protection depending on inverter design and manufacturer requirements.

Why use a dedicated consumer unit for a heat pump?
A dedicated unit provides appropriate protection, circuit separation and easier maintenance compared to integrating into an existing board.

What is the difference between Type B and Type B HP?
Type B HP devices are designed specifically for heat pump applications, while standard Type B devices provide broad DC residual current detection.
