Specialist Wiska Cable Glands Explained
Specialist Wiska cable glands explained: not every electrical installation can use a standard cable gland. Small-diameter lighting cables, screened cables and unusual cable-entry requirements may need different sealing or termination arrangements. Wiska manufactures specialist cable glands, reduction sealing inserts and compatible accessories to address these applications. This guide explains how selected products work, where they differ from ordinary glands and what electricians should check before choosing a suitable cable-entry solution.
When Are Specialist Wiska Cable Glands Needed?
A cable gland creates a suitable entry for a cable passing into an electrical enclosure. Depending on the gland design, it may provide sealing, cable retention, strain relief or additional termination functions.
Standard cable glands work well when their dimensions and performance characteristics match the installation. However, some applications require more specialist products.
- Small-diameter flexible cables used with external lighting.
- Cables requiring reduction sealing inserts.
- Selected screened or armoured cables requiring appropriate termination arrangements.
- Enclosures exposed to particular environmental conditions.
- Installations requiring a specific cable gland construction or material.
The appropriate gland depends on the cable’s actual outside diameter, construction, installation environment and the enclosure entry.
Wiska SPRINT Cable Gland Inserts and Accessories
Wiska manufactures specialist inserts and accessories for selected cable gland systems. These components can change the sealing arrangement or support particular cable dimensions, depending on the compatible gland model.
One example from the Electrical4Less range is the Wiska SPRINT Cable Gland Insert Kit.

The Wiska WINSERTKIT is an example of a specialist cable gland accessory kit. Such components should be matched to their designated gland ranges rather than assumed to fit all Wiska products.
When checking gland inserts, confirm the gland series, thread size, insert design and supported cable diameter. A reduction insert is not necessarily interchangeable with a standard sealing insert.
Wiska SPRINT ESKV-RDE 20 BK – Reduction Sealing Gland
The Wiska SPRINT ESKV-RDE 20 BK, manufacturer code 10064994, is a polyamide cable gland with a reduction sealing insert.
It is intended for suitable cable-entry applications where the reduced sealing range is useful, including selected small-diameter flexible cable installations.
Why Use a Reduction Sealing Insert?
A reduction sealing insert enables a compatible gland to accommodate a smaller cable diameter than might otherwise be possible with a conventional sealing arrangement.
For the ESKV-RDE 20 BK, Wiska specifies a cable diameter range of 4–13mm. The insert should be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
This may be useful for certain outdoor lighting cables, provided the cable, enclosure and complete installation are suitable for the environmental conditions.

The Wiska SPRINT ESKV-RDE 20 BK uses an M20 connection thread and a reduction sealing insert for compatible cables with outside diameters from 4mm to 13mm.
ESKV-RDE 20 BK Technical Characteristics
According to the manufacturer’s published data sheet, the ESKV-RDE 20 BK has the following specifications:
- Manufacturer product code: 10064994.
- Connection thread: M20 x 1.5.
- Cable diameter range: 4–13mm.
- Gland material: polyamide.
- Sealing gasket material: EPDM.
- Colour: black, RAL 9005.
- Manufacturer-specified protection: IP69 and IP68, with IP68 tested at 5 bar for 30 minutes.
- Published temperature range: -40°C to +100°C.
These are product specifications, not guarantees of performance in every assembled enclosure. The environmental rating depends on correct fitting and the suitability of the complete cable-entry arrangement.
For the technical specification, see the official Wiska ESKV-RDE 20 BK data sheet.
Wiska ShieldGLAND for Specialist Cable Terminations
Another specialist product family is Wiska ShieldGLAND.
ShieldGLAND products are intended for selected cable constructions requiring particular sealing, clamping or termination arrangements.
Depending on the exact gland and cable construction, applications may include certain screened, braided or armoured cables.
The correct gland must be selected using the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Where protective earthing or screen continuity is required, the complete termination arrangement must be suitable.
Installing a ShieldGLAND does not by itself guarantee electromagnetic compatibility, earthing continuity or compliance with electrical installation regulations.
ShieldGLAND Pro and Earth Fly Lead Arrangements
Selected ShieldGLAND Pro products are supplied with accessories such as brass locknuts, E-Spring components and earth fly leads.
These accessories are intended to form part of the specified termination system. Their function and correct installation depend on the product variant and the cable being used.

The pictured Wiska ShieldGLAND Pro M20S kit illustrates a specialist gland arrangement supplied with additional termination accessories. Always verify the correct gland size, cable compatibility and fitting requirements.

How Specialist Glands Differ from Standard Polyamide Glands
Standard polyamide cable glands are suitable for many installations involving compatible non-armoured cables.
Specialist gland ranges address additional requirements, such as particular sealing ranges, cable constructions or termination methods.
- Standard polyamide glands: for compatible general-purpose cable-entry applications.
- Reduction sealing glands: for specified cable-entry arrangements requiring a different sealing insert.
- ShieldGLAND: for selected specialist cable constructions and termination arrangements.
- SWA brass cable glands: for appropriate armoured cable termination, including necessary armour clamping and earthing arrangements.

Five Checks Before Selecting a Specialist Cable Gland
- Measure the actual outside diameter of the cable and compare it with the manufacturer’s permitted sealing range.
- Check the gland connection thread against the enclosure entry.
- Identify whether the cable is non-armoured, armoured or screened and whether a specialist termination is required.
- Check the environment, required ingress protection, temperature conditions and any other relevant exposure.
- Review the specified installation method and confirm whether additional locknuts, seals or termination accessories are needed.
A correct thread size alone does not guarantee that the cable gland is suitable. For example, two M20 glands may have different cable sealing ranges or be intended for different cable constructions.
