EV Circuit Protection for EV Chargers

EV Consumer Units

Dedicated EV consumer units provide circuit protection for electric vehicle charge points. Depending on the model, a unit may include an RCD and MCB arrangement, an RCBO, double-pole devices, a main switch or Type 2 surge protection.

Options are available in metal and IP-rated enclosures for different indoor and outdoor installation requirements. Product configurations vary, so the individual specification should always be checked before ordering.

PEN Fault Protection for EV Chargers

EV chargers connected to a TN-C-S or PME electrical supply may require protection against the risks associated with an open PEN conductor fault.

Some EV chargers incorporate suitable PEN fault protection within the charging equipment. Where this protection is not built into the charger, a separate PEN fault detection unit or an EV consumer unit incorporating the required protection may be needed.

RCD and RCBO Protection

Appropriate residual-current protection is an important part of an EV charger circuit. This category includes products using Type A and Type B RCD or RCBO protection in a selection of current ratings and trip curves.

The correct RCD or RCBO type depends on the charging equipment and the DC residual-current protection already incorporated within it. A Type A device may be suitable where the required DC protection is provided by the charger or a separate compatible detection device. Other installations may require Type B protection.

The EV charger manufacturer’s instructions should be followed when selecting the protective device.

Surge Protection for EV Charger Circuits

Selected EV consumer units include a Type 2 surge protection device. An SPD can help protect the electrical installation and connected charging equipment against transient overvoltages.

Surge protection requirements should be considered as part of the complete electrical installation. An SPD fitted within an EV consumer unit does not necessarily replace surge protection required elsewhere within the property.

Choosing the Correct EV Circuit Protection

The correct EV circuit protection cannot be selected from the charger rating alone. The installer should consider:

  • The charger’s rated current and manufacturer’s instructions
  • Single-phase or three-phase supply
  • The required RCD, RCBO or MCB arrangement
  • Any DC residual-current protection built into the charger
  • The property’s earthing arrangement
  • Whether PEN fault protection is required
  • Surge protection requirements
  • The installation location and required enclosure rating
  • Cable size, route and installation method

EV charging circuits should be designed, installed and tested by a suitably qualified installer in accordance with the charger manufacturer’s instructions and the applicable requirements of BS 7671.
