What Is a Consumer Unit?

A consumer unit (also known as a fuse board) is the hub of your property’s electrical system. It distributes power to individual circuits and protects each one using devices such as MCBs, RCDs, or RCBOs.

All our units comply with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), including:

  • Non-combustible metal enclosures
  • RCBO or RCD circuit protection
  • SPD surge protection where required
  • Clear circuit labelling and safety markings

Whether you’re wiring a new build, upgrading an old fuse box, or adding capacity to a garage or extension, we’ve got a solution that works.

Our Range of Domestic Consumer Units

We stock over 280 configurations — here’s what you’ll find:

  • Main switch consumer units – clean, simple layouts
  • RCBO fuse boards – protection per circuit, no nuisance tripping
  • Garage consumer units – smaller units for outhouses or external installs
  • 18th Edition metal fuse boards – required by UK regulations
  • SPD-protected models – with built-in surge protection
  • Populated fuse boxes – pre-installed breakers, ready to go

We also carry a full range of accessories: blanking plates, SPD modules, tail kits, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a consumer unit?

A consumer unit (or fuse box) distributes electricity across your property and includes protective devices like RCBOs or RCDs to prevent faults and overloads.

Are all consumer units metal now?

Most domestic consumer units must be metal.
As per BS 7671 Regulation 421.1.201, units in domestic premises must be enclosed in non-combustible material when installed indoors. Plastic units are only permitted if housed inside a fully non-combustible cabinet that meets fire resistance standards.

Should I use RCBOs or RCDs?

RCBOs offer individual circuit protection, meaning one fault won’t take out all your power. They are now preferred for most modern installs.

What unit should I install in my garage?

Use a garage consumer unit – a compact, self-contained board with RCD or RCBO, ideal for outbuildings.

Can I install a consumer unit myself?

No. It must be installed or certified by a qualified electrician. This work is notifiable under Part P of UK Building Regulations.

Do I need surge protection?

Yes — especially for homes with expensive tech or sensitive electronics. Many new installs now require SPD units by default.

What’s the difference between Type A and Type AC RCDs?

Type A protects against both AC and pulsating DC faults. Type AC only covers AC faults — making them less suitable for modern homes.
