WAGO 274 Series Explained: New Inline Connectors and WAGOBOX Mini

WAGO 274 Series Explained

Blog category: Brand News & Features | Electrical4Less Technical Guide

The new WAGO 274 Series brings a different approach to inline electrical connections. Instead of relying entirely on fixed multipole connector blocks, electricians can use modular, side-stackable lever connectors to build organised connection arrangements.

Alongside these connectors, WAGO has introduced the WAGOBOX Mini, a compact junction box designed for approved WAGO 274 Series and 221 Inline connector configurations.

In this WAGO 274 Series Explained guide, we look at what’s new, how the modular system works, the differences between the connector models, and what UK electricians should know about the new WAGOBOX Mini.

Both ranges are coming soon to Electrical4Less.

Explore the new WAGO 274 range at Electrical4Less.

What Is the New WAGO 274 Series?

The WAGO 274 Series is a family of modular inline lever connectors designed for joining electrical conductors using WAGO’s Push-in CAGE CLAMP connection technology.

Its distinguishing feature is the ability to stack compatible connector modules alongside one another, creating organised multipole arrangements without relying exclusively on fixed connector blocks.

The new range includes individual two-conductor and four-conductor modules, pre-built multipole assemblies and suitable mounting and strain relief accessories.

What’s Different from Existing WAGO Connectors?

Many UK sparks are already familiar with WAGO’s established 221 Series lever connectors. The new 274 Series offers a different physical connection arrangement, with individual inline modules designed to work together as part of a modular system.

The main differences include:

  • Modular construction: Compatible modules can be stacked alongside one another.
  • Inline connections: Conductors are connected through the module rather than using a conventional multiport connector layout.
  • Additional mounting options: Pre-built assemblies, mounting feet and suitable accessories offer installation flexibility.
  • Tool-free connection: Lever-operated Push-in CAGE CLAMP terminals provide quick conductor termination.

The new 274 Series does not make existing WAGO connectors obsolete. Instead, it provides electricians with another option where compact, modular inline wiring is appropriate.

How Does the WAGO 274 Modular System Work?

The modular construction is one of the most interesting aspects of the new WAGO 274 Series.

Rather than relying solely on fixed-size connector blocks, electricians can arrange compatible modules side by side to create connection assemblies suited to their installation requirements.

WAGO also offers pre-built multipole arrangements, optional strain relief components and mounting accessories.

Depending on the selected assembly and accessories, mounting options include snap-in feet, M3 screw fixing and DIN rail mounting adaptors.

The range also incorporates separate jumper slots for compatible commoning accessories.

These features offer additional flexibility, but installers must follow WAGO’s approved configurations and installation instructions.

  • Up to five WAGO 274-2401 two-conductor connector modules.
  • Up to four WAGO 274-4201 four-conductor connector modules.
  • Specified WAGO 221 Inline connector configurations.

Actual permitted arrangements depend on the connector type, mounting accessories, cables and manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Can WAGOBOX Mini Be Used for Maintenance-Free Connections?

Yes. The WAGOBOX Mini is designed for maintenance-free applications to BS 5733, provided the approved connector combinations and installation requirements are followed.

However, maintenance-free performance is not achieved simply by placing any connector inside the enclosure.

The connectors, cables, strain relief and complete assembly must meet the manufacturer’s requirements.

Electricians must also consider the installation environment, circuit loading and applicable requirements of BS 7671.

When Might an Electrician Choose the New WAGO 274 Series?

The main reason to consider the new WAGO 274 Series is its modular construction.

Compatible inline connector modules can be arranged into organised multipole assemblies instead of relying exclusively on fixed-size connector blocks.

Potential applications include suitable lighting connections, electrical refurbishment work, maintenance installations and approved junction box arrangements.

However, the new connectors should not automatically replace every existing WAGO product. The correct choice depends on conductor size, circuit loading, enclosure compatibility, accessibility and installation conditions.

Need a Larger WAGO Junction Box?

The WAGOBOX Mini is designed for compact installations. Where additional internal space is required, a larger junction box may be more appropriate.

Electrical4Less also supplies the WAGO Box PRO 207-3323 for 221 Series Connectors.

This larger enclosure measures 161 × 115 × 36mm and is intended for specified WAGO 221 Series connector arrangements.

It should not be assumed compatible with the new 274 Series without manufacturer confirmation.
