The Secret to a Perfect Outdoor Wiring Project with Wiska, Wago & RayTech Magic Gel

Outdoor Wiring with Wiska WAGO and RayTech Magic Gel

Outdoor wiring with Wiska WAGO and RayTech Magic Gel combines three different types of electrical installation products: a protective junction box, suitable lever connectors and a specialist insulating gel. Used correctly, these components can help protect connections in garden lighting and other appropriate outdoor electrical installations. This guide explains the function of each product, how to plan a suitable connection and why enclosure sealing, cable compatibility and manufacturer instructions are essential.

Why Outdoor Electrical Connections Need Protection

Outdoor electrical installations face conditions that are less predictable than those typically found inside a building. Rain, changes in temperature, condensation, mechanical exposure and movement of cables can all affect electrical equipment.

Garden lighting, outdoor sockets and equipment connections must therefore be designed using products suitable for their location and the relevant electrical installation requirements.

A reliable outdoor connection arrangement needs to consider three separate functions:

  • Enclosure protection – a suitable junction box houses and protects the electrical connections.
  • Electrical connection – correctly rated terminals or connectors join the conductors.
  • Moisture protection – suitable sealing arrangements, and where appropriate a compatible gel jointing system, help protect against water ingress.

These functions are related, but no individual component guarantees the safety or weather resistance of the completed installation.

1. Wiska Junction Boxes for Outdoor Electrical Connections

Wiska manufactures junction boxes with different enclosure sizes, cable-entry designs and environmental protection ratings.

Its COMBI junction box range is particularly useful for selected domestic, commercial and outdoor electrical applications.

Depending on the model, Wiska COMBI enclosures incorporate features such as:

  • UV- and ozone-resistant enclosure materials.
  • Integrated cable-entry membranes.
  • Threaded entries for compatible cable glands.
  • Captive cover screws on selected models.
  • Different internal dimensions and connection arrangements.

The correct junction box should provide sufficient internal space for the conductors and connectors, while allowing suitable cable entry and mounting.

Wiska IP66 and IP67 Cable-Entry Arrangements

Wiska specifies IP66 protection for selected COMBI junction boxes when the designated membrane cable entries are used correctly.

For suitable models, the manufacturer specifies IP67 when a compatible ESKV cable gland is fitted to the appropriate threaded entry.

IP66 provides dust-tight protection and resistance to powerful water jets under defined test conditions. IP67 also addresses temporary immersion under defined test conditions.

Neither rating should be treated as a general guarantee that every installed junction box is suitable for direct burial or permanent immersion.

For further technical information, refer to the official Wiska COMBI cable-entry guide.

2. WAGO Lever Connectors for Secure Conductor Connections

WAGO manufactures electrical connection products used in many types of wiring installations, including the popular 221 series lever connectors.

WAGO 221 connectors use a lever-operated spring connection. The conductor is inserted after opening the lever, and the lever is then closed to secure the connection.

Selected WAGO 221 connectors accept compatible solid, stranded and fine-stranded copper conductors, subject to the model’s specified conductor ranges and installation instructions.

The connectors are convenient because they allow suitable conductors to be joined without conventional screw terminals.

Are WAGO 221 Connectors Waterproof?

No. Standard WAGO 221 lever connectors are not, on their own, waterproof cable joints.

Where they are used outdoors, the connectors must be housed and protected by an appropriate enclosure or manufacturer-approved connection system.

For example, WAGO manufactures its own Gelbox system, which is tested for specified WAGO 221 and 2273 connectors.

Compatibility between WAGO connectors and a different manufacturer’s encapsulation product must not be assumed. Check the jointing compound and connector manufacturers’ technical instructions before combining products.

3. RayTech Magic Gel for Electrical Joint Protection

RayTech Magic Gel is a two-component insulating and sealing compound intended for compatible electrical connection protection applications.

After the components are mixed in the prescribed proportions, the material cross-links into a soft, flexible gel.

Unlike a rigid casting resin, the cured gel is designed to remain re-enterable, allowing access to a suitable joint if later inspection or work is required.

RayTech lists the following characteristics for Magic Gel:

  • Two-component insulating gel.
  • Low-viscosity material before curing.
  • Soft, re-enterable gel after cross-linking.
  • Typical cross-linking time of approximately 15 minutes at 23°C.
  • Manufacturer-stated IP68 protection when used in appropriate casings.

The product’s published IP68 performance applies to suitable completed jointing arrangements, not automatically to every junction box filled with gel.

Magic Gel must be used in accordance with the current manufacturer’s technical data sheet, safety information and mixing instructions.

4. How Wiska, WAGO and RayTech Products Work Together

The three products have different jobs within a potential outdoor connection arrangement.

A Wiska junction box provides an enclosure. Suitable WAGO connectors provide electrical conductor connections. RayTech Magic Gel may offer additional insulation and moisture protection where the complete jointing arrangement is confirmed as compatible by the relevant manufacturers.

This distinction is important: buying three quality products does not automatically produce a tested waterproof jointing system.

Before using them together, installers should confirm that:

  • The Wiska enclosure is suitable for the intended location.
  • The selected WAGO connectors are suitable for the circuit and conductors.
  • The gel is suitable for contact with the connector and conductor materials.
  • The enclosure design and filling method are compatible with the gel application.
  • The completed assembly meets the necessary electrical and environmental requirements.

If compatibility cannot be confirmed, a purpose-designed and manufacturer-tested waterproof jointing kit is a more appropriate option.

5. Planning an Outdoor Electrical Joint – Practical Checklist

Outdoor electrical work should be designed, installed, inspected and tested by a suitably competent person, following applicable safety requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions.

The following checklist explains the main stages of planning a suitable connection. It is not a substitute for product-specific installation instructions.

  1. Assess the installation location. Determine whether the joint will be exposed to rain, standing water, soil, mechanical damage or other environmental conditions.
  2. Select an appropriate enclosure or complete jointing kit. Check its intended application, internal dimensions, ingress protection and mounting method.
  3. Identify the cable construction and dimensions. Ensure that the cable-entry method, glands and seals are compatible with the actual cable.
  4. Select correctly rated connectors. Verify conductor material, conductor cross-section, voltage and current ratings, and any other relevant limitations.
  5. Verify any encapsulation system. If using RayTech Magic Gel, confirm compatibility with the selected casing and connectors and follow the manufacturer’s mixing, filling and curing requirements.
  6. Complete and verify the installation. Ensure all entries and covers are properly assembled and carry out the required inspection and electrical testing.

Before working on an existing electrical circuit, it must be correctly isolated and proved dead using appropriate safe isolation procedures.

Can You Fill a Wiska Junction Box with Magic Gel?

A Wiska junction box should not automatically be assumed suitable for filling with Magic Gel simply because both products are intended for electrical installations.

Whether the arrangement is suitable depends on the enclosure material, cable entries, connection system, gel compatibility and manufacturer’s instructions.

In particular, the Wiska enclosure’s published IP rating and RayTech Magic Gel’s published performance are not automatically combined into a new rating for an untested assembly.

Likewise, using a spare cable-entry opening as a filling port should only be done if the manufacturer specifically approves that method and provides a suitable final sealing arrangement.

Where a complete joint is intended for especially wet, buried or potentially submerged conditions, select an appropriately rated jointing system intended for those circumstances.

Common Outdoor Wiring Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming ordinary lever connectors are waterproof without protection.
  • Using cable glands that do not match the cable’s actual outside diameter.
  • Damaging cable-entry membranes during installation.
  • Leaving unused cable-entry openings unsealed.
  • Assuming an IP-rated enclosure is automatically suitable for burial or permanent immersion.
  • Mixing or applying a gel compound without following its manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Combining connectors, gel and an enclosure without checking compatibility.
  • Overcrowding the enclosure or trapping conductors beneath the lid.
  • Relying on a product rating as proof of BS 7671 compliance for the complete installation.

Outdoor Garden Lighting and Cable Jointing Applications

Garden lighting is a common reason for electricians to consider weather-resistant junction boxes and moisture-protected cable connections.

Depending on the design, the installation may involve a suitable outdoor junction box mounted above ground, a specialist cable joint or a manufacturer-approved encapsulated connection system.

The correct solution depends on factors such as circuit voltage, protective devices, cable type, exposure to water and whether the connection must remain accessible for inspection or maintenance.
