Whether you’re upgrading from a 3-pin plug, replacing an older unit, or fitting your first charger, the right choice depends on your car’s onboard charger, where you park, and how you want to manage energy use.

Most UK homes with off-street parking choose a 7kW single-phase charger as the sweet spot between speed and practicality, while 3kW/3.6kW charging is typically used where supply limits or usage patterns make slower charging acceptable. Modern private chargers sold for home use must meet smart charge point regulations (smart scheduling and security features), which helps you take advantage of off-peak rates and reduces strain on the grid.
