RCBO Circuit Breakers for Consumer Units and Distribution Boards

RCBO circuit breakers provide combined residual current and overcurrent protection for individual electrical circuits. An RCBO (Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent Protection) helps protect against earth leakage faults, overloads and short circuits, making these devices widely used in domestic, commercial and industrial electrical installations.

Electrical4Less supplies a wide selection of RCBOs from FuseBox, Hager, Live Electrical, WCED Whitecliffe, Niglon and GARO. Our range includes Type A, Type B and specialist Type B-HP protection, alongside B Curve and C Curve devices, compact RCBOs and bi-directional models for suitable applications.

Single Pole, Double Pole and Three-Phase RCBOs

RCBOs are available in different pole configurations to suit the electrical installation and distribution equipment.

  • Single Pole and 1P+N RCBOs – Commonly used for domestic and commercial final circuits, including lighting and socket outlets. The neutral switching arrangement varies by model.
  • Double Pole RCBOs – Available for suitable single-phase installations where switching of both line and neutral conductors is required.
  • Three-Phase RCBOs – Three pole and 3P+N devices for compatible three-phase distribution systems used in commercial and industrial applications.

Always confirm compatibility with the intended consumer unit, distribution board and manufacturer’s approved protective device range.

RCBO Residual Current Protection – Type A, Type B and Type B-HP

Type A RCBOs

Type A RCBOs detect sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC residual currents within their specified operating characteristics. They are commonly used in modern electrical installations incorporating electronic equipment, LED lighting, household appliances and other suitable loads.

Read our Type A RCBO Guide for more information about residual current protection and selection considerations.

Type B RCBOs

Type B RCBOs provide residual current protection for AC, pulsating DC and smooth DC residual currents within their specified operating characteristics. They may be required for certain inverter-driven equipment, variable-speed drives, solar PV systems, EV charging equipment and other installations where the connected equipment can produce DC residual fault currents.

The correct Type B protective device must be selected according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and the installation design.

Type B-HP Protection for Heat Pumps

Type B-HP residual current protection is associated with certain heat pump applications, particularly equipment incorporating inverter-driven compressors and electronic motor controls. The precise protection characteristics depend on the manufacturer’s device specification.

Electrical4Less supplies specialist protection solutions for heat pump installations, including suitable Type B and Type B-HP devices and distribution equipment. Not all Type B-HP products are RCBOs; some are RCDs used alongside separate overcurrent protection.

Browse our Heat Pump Consumer Units for available specialist distribution solutions.

Type B residual current protection must not be confused with B Curve overcurrent protection. These describe two different electrical protection characteristics.

B Curve and C Curve RCBO Circuit Breakers

RCBOs are available with different overcurrent tripping characteristics to suit the electrical circuit and connected load.

  • B Curve RCBOs – Commonly used for domestic and light commercial circuits with relatively low starting currents.
  • C Curve RCBOs – Often used for suitable commercial or industrial circuits with higher inrush currents, including certain motors and lighting installations.

Selection must take account of the circuit characteristics, prospective fault current, disconnection requirements and applicable electrical standards. A C Curve device should not be substituted for a B Curve RCBO without verifying the installation requirements.

6kA and 10kA RCBOs

RCBO circuit breakers are available with different rated short-circuit breaking capacities, including 6kA and 10kA models. The required rating depends on the prospective fault current and any applicable manufacturer-approved coordination arrangements.

Our range includes standard and compact RCBOs for compatible domestic consumer units, as well as protective devices designed for commercial and three-phase distribution equipment.

Bi-Directional RCBOs for Modern Electrical Installations

Bi-directional RCBOs are designed and rated for suitable installations where electrical power may flow in either direction. Depending on the manufacturer’s specification, these devices can be relevant to solar PV, battery storage, EV charging and other electrical systems incorporating multiple power sources.

Not every RCBO is approved for bi-directional applications. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions, terminal arrangements and intended connection requirements.

For further information, read our Bidirectional RCBO Guide.

For more details about the different ranges, read our FuseBox RCBO Guide.

Hager RCBOs

Browse our Hager RCBOs for compatible Hager consumer units and distribution boards. Device selection should take account of the appropriate product series, current rating and manufacturer compatibility requirements.

Live Electrical, WCED, Niglon and GARO RCBOs

Electrical4Less also supplies RCBOs from Live Electrical, WCED Whitecliffe, Niglon and GARO. These ranges include different pole configurations, overcurrent characteristics, breaking capacities and residual current protection types for suitable installation requirements.

Browse the products above to compare available devices and check individual technical specifications.

How to Choose the Correct RCBO

When selecting RCBO circuit breakers, consider the following specifications:

  • Manufacturer compatibility with the consumer unit or distribution board
  • Rated current, including common 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, 32A and 40A options
  • Residual current type, such as Type A or Type B
  • Required residual operating current, such as 30mA or 100mA
  • B Curve or C Curve overcurrent characteristics
  • 6kA or 10kA breaking capacity, as appropriate
  • Single pole, 1P+N, double pole or three-phase configuration
  • Physical dimensions, neutral connections and busbar compatibility
  • Bi-directional suitability where required
  • Applicable manufacturer instructions and BS 7671 requirements

RCBOs that appear physically similar are not necessarily interchangeable between manufacturers or consumer unit ranges.

RCBO Consumer Units and Related Circuit Protection

Looking for a complete distribution board rather than individual RCBO devices? Browse our Consumer Units category, including main switch boards, SPD consumer units and specialist electrical distribution equipment.

Explore our RCBO Consumer Units for boards designed to provide individual circuit protection using compatible RCBO devices.

For specialist heating installations, see our Heat Pump Consumer Units range, including suitable Type B and Type B-HP residual current protection arrangements.

Always confirm that the protective devices and consumer unit are compatible and approved for use together.

RCBO Frequently Asked Questions

What is an RCBO?

An RCBO is a Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent Protection. It combines residual current protection with overload and short-circuit protection in a single device.

What is the difference between Type A and Type B RCBOs?

Type A RCBOs detect sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC residual currents. Type B RCBOs provide additional detection capability for smooth DC residual currents and may be required for certain inverter-driven electrical equipment.

Is a Type B RCBO the same as a B Curve RCBO?

No. Type B describes the residual current detection characteristics, while B Curve describes the overcurrent tripping characteristic. A device can have Type B residual current protection and a different overcurrent curve.

What is Type B-HP residual current protection?

Type B-HP refers to specialist residual current protection associated with certain heat pump applications. The exact characteristics and suitability depend on the manufacturer’s specifications. Type B-HP equipment may be an RCD rather than an RCBO.

Can I use any RCBO in any consumer unit?

No. Protective devices must be compatible with the specific consumer unit or distribution board. Manufacturer compatibility information should always be checked before installation.

Are all RCBOs bi-directional?

No. Bi-directional suitability must be confirmed from the manufacturer’s technical documentation and connection instructions.

Should I choose a 6kA or 10kA RCBO?

The appropriate breaking capacity depends on the prospective fault current, equipment compatibility and installation requirements. A competent electrician should verify the correct specification.

Who should install RCBO circuit breakers?

RCBOs should be selected, installed and tested by a competent electrician in accordance with the relevant installation requirements.
