Electrical Earthing Products and Accessories

Electrical earthing is an essential part of a safe electrical installation. A correctly designed earthing arrangement provides a connection to earth and supports protective measures against electric shock. Protective bonding helps reduce potentially dangerous voltage differences between relevant conductive parts.

At Electrical4Less, we stock electrical earthing components for domestic, commercial and industrial applications. Our range includes earth electrodes, clamps, terminals, distribution earth bars, busbar chambers and installation accessories.

Explore Our Electrical Earthing Range

  • Earth Rods – Earth electrodes for installations requiring a local connection to earth, including suitable TT earthing arrangements.
  • Earth Clamps – BS 951 pipe bonding clamps, including EC14 dry-condition and EC15 damp-condition models from Unicrimp, Niglon and other suppliers.
  • Earth Bars – Connection and termination points for protective conductors in electrical installations and distribution equipment.
  • Earth Terminals – Components for making secure and organised earthing conductor connections.
  • Busbar Chambers – Enclosed busbar assemblies for electrical power distribution in commercial and industrial installations.
  • Earthing Accessories – Additional connectors, earthing plates, boxes and installation fittings.

Why Is Electrical Earthing Important?

Electrical earthing and protective bonding form part of the safety arrangements used in electrical installations. When correctly designed alongside suitable protective devices, they help reduce the risk of electric shock and support the automatic disconnection of supply under relevant fault conditions.

The correct arrangement depends on the electrical supply characteristics, installation design and applicable requirements of BS 7671.

TN-S, TN-C-S and TT Earthing Systems

Different electrical installations use different earthing arrangements. Three important low-voltage supply arrangements encountered in the UK are:

  • TN-S – The supply provides separate neutral and protective earthing arrangements, with the installation connected to the distributor’s earthing facility.
  • TN-C-S – Commonly associated with Protective Multiple Earthing (PME), where the supply uses a combined protective earth and neutral conductor over part of the network before they are separated.
  • TT – The installation uses a local earth electrode arrangement rather than relying on a distributor-provided protective earthing terminal.

For TT installations, selecting the correct earth electrode and associated connections is particularly important. Earth rod suitability and performance depend on factors including soil conditions, electrode design and installation testing.

Earth Rods, Electrodes and Earthing Conductors

Earth rods provide a connection between the earthing arrangement and the general mass of earth. The effectiveness of an earth electrode depends on its contact with the surrounding ground, soil resistivity and environmental conditions.

Earthing conductors connect the installation’s main earthing terminal to the earth electrode or other suitable means of earthing. Conductor selection must take account of the electrical installation design, applicable standards and protection against mechanical damage and corrosion.

Explore our Earth Rods category for available electrode products and related options.

Electrical Bonding and Earth Clamps

Protective bonding is intended to reduce dangerous potential differences between relevant conductive parts. Suitable earth clamps may be used to connect protective bonding conductors to metallic pipework where required by the installation design.

Our Earth Clamps range includes EC14 clamps for dry, non-corrosive conditions and EC15 models suitable for damp conditions, which may also be used in suitable dry environments.

Always select the correct clamp for the pipe diameter, conductor capacity and installation environment. Pipe bonding clamps should not be assumed suitable for connections to earth electrodes.

Earth Bars, Earth Terminals and Busbar Chambers

Earth bars and earth terminals provide organised connections for protective conductors in electrical equipment and installations. Their selection depends on the conductor sizes, number of connections and electrical system requirements.

For power distribution applications, our Busbar Chambers provide enclosed busbar distribution arrangements. These are a separate type of equipment from protective earth bars and should be selected according to their electrical ratings and intended application.

Electrical Earthing Standards and Installation Guidance

Electrical earthing and bonding arrangements should be designed, installed, inspected and tested in accordance with the applicable requirements of BS 7671 and relevant product standards.

Important considerations include:

  • The earthing arrangement and characteristics of the electrical supply
  • Correct sizing and protection of earthing and protective bonding conductors
  • Suitable earth electrodes and connections where required
  • Correct selection of earth clamps, terminals and conductor connections
  • Protection against corrosion and mechanical damage
  • Inspection and testing of the completed installation

For further technical background, read the IET Wiring Matters guidance on earthing systems, covering TN-S, TN-C-S, TT arrangements, earth electrodes and protective conductors. This is background guidance from 2011; installers should consult the current applicable standards for their projects.
