Earth Clamps – EC14, EC15 and Heavy-Duty Pipe Bonding Clamps

Earth clamps are essential electrical bonding accessories used to connect protective bonding conductors to suitable metallic pipework. A correctly selected and installed clamp helps maintain electrical continuity and reduces the risk of dangerous potential differences within an electrical installation.

EC14 vs EC15 Earth Clamps – Which Should You Choose?

The main difference between EC14 and EC15 earth clamps is the environment in which they are designed to operate.

  • EC14 Earth Clamps – Intended for dry, non-corrosive conditions only. These models commonly feature silver or uncoloured identification labels.
  • EC15 Earth Clamps – Designed for wet or damp conditions and also suitable for dry environments. They commonly feature blue identification labels.
  • Heavy-Duty Earth Clamps – Available for larger metallic pipework, with different conductor capacities and environmental ratings depending on the model.

An EC15 earth clamp can be used in both wet and dry conditions, provided the installation meets the manufacturer’s requirements. This makes EC15 models particularly useful for electricians working across different environments.

However, an EC14 earth clamp designed for dry conditions should not be used in damp or wet locations.

Choosing the Correct Earth Clamp Size

Earth clamps are available in different sizes to accommodate various pipe diameters. Selecting the correct size is important for achieving a secure and reliable bonding connection.

  • 12-32mm – Commonly used for smaller metallic pipework.
  • 13-38mm – Available in selected Unicrimp EC14 and EC15 clamps.

Always check the specified pipe diameter and conductor capacity before ordering. The strap length, pipe diameter and permitted conductor size are separate specifications and should not be confused.

BS 951 Earth Clamps and Electrical Safety

BS 951 specifies requirements for electrical earthing and bonding clamps. Selecting the correct clamp is an important part of ensuring safe, dependable protective bonding in accordance with the applicable requirements of BS 7671.

When installing an earth clamp, electricians should consider:

  • The diameter and material of the metallic pipework
  • Whether the installation environment is dry, damp or wet
  • The required protective bonding conductor size
  • The manufacturer’s maximum conductor capacity
  • The recommended clamping and tightening torque
  • The suitability and accessibility of the bonding connection

Earth clamps intended for metallic pipe bonding should not automatically be used as earth rod or earth electrode connectors. Always select a fitting specifically designed for the intended application.
