RCBO Circuit Breakers for Consumer Units and Distribution Boards

RCBO circuit breakers are used to protect individual circuits within consumer units and distribution boards. They combine overcurrent protection with residual current protection, helping protect against overloads, short circuits and earth leakage faults from a single device.

Using individual RCBO protection can help reduce disruption compared with shared RCD protection. If a fault occurs on one circuit, the affected RCBO can disconnect that circuit without necessarily switching off other circuits in the board.

Choosing the Right RCBO

Before ordering an RCBO, check the technical requirements of the installation and confirm compatibility with the consumer unit or distribution board. Important details include:

  • Brand and board compatibility
  • Current rating, such as 6A, 16A, 20A, 32A, 40A or 50A
  • Breaking capacity, such as 6kA or 10kA
  • Tripping curve, usually B Curve or C Curve

Key Types of RCBOs

Single Pole RCBOs

Single pole RCBOs are commonly used for individual final circuits such as lighting, socket circuits and smaller domestic loads. They are often used in residential consumer units where each circuit requires separate residual current and overcurrent protection.

Double Pole RCBOs

Double pole RCBOs disconnect both live and neutral conductors. They are commonly used where full circuit isolation is required, subject to the installation design and manufacturer requirements.

Three-Phase RCBOs

Three-phase RCBOs are used in suitable commercial and industrial installations where residual current and overcurrent protection is required for three-phase circuits.

Bi-Directional RCBOs

Bi-directional RCBOs are designed for circuits where current may flow in either direction. They are often selected for modern installations involving equipment such as solar PV, battery storage or EV charging, where specified by the system design and manufacturer guidance.

Type A RCBOs, B Curve and C Curve Options

Type A RCBOs detect AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents. They are commonly used in modern installations with electronic equipment such as LED lighting, computers, appliances with electronic controls and EV-related equipment where required by the installation design.

B Curve and C Curve refer to the overcurrent tripping characteristic of the device. B Curve RCBOs are commonly used for domestic and light commercial circuits with lower inrush currents, while C Curve RCBOs may be used for circuits with higher inrush currents, such as certain lighting, motor or commercial loads.

Type B RCBO or B Curve RCBO?

Type B RCBO and B Curve RCBO do not mean the same thing. Type B refers to the residual current detection type, including smooth DC residual current detection. B Curve refers to the overcurrent tripping curve. Always check the full product specification before ordering.
