Three Phase SPD Surge Protection Devices

A Three Phase SPD is designed to limit transient overvoltages within three-phase electrical installations and divert surge current away from connected equipment. These surge protective devices are commonly installed at three-phase distribution equipment as part of the overall electrical protection strategy.

Three Phase Surge Protection

Three-phase surge protection is widely used in commercial, industrial and larger electrical installations where sensitive equipment, control systems, machinery and electronic devices may be vulnerable to transient overvoltages.

The appropriate SPD type and configuration depends on the installation, supply arrangement, earthing system and the level of surge protection required.

Type 1, Type 2 and Combined Three Phase SPDs

Type 2 SPDs are commonly used to provide protection against switching surges and transient overvoltages associated with indirect lightning effects. Where protection against partial lightning current is required, a Type 1 or combined Type 1+2 SPD may be specified.

Choosing a 3 Phase SPD

  • SPD type – determine whether Type 1, Type 2 or combined Type 1+2 protection is required.
  • System voltage – select an SPD suitable for the three-phase supply.
  • Configuration – check the required protection arrangement for the installation.
  • Earthing system – confirm compatibility with the relevant supply and earthing arrangement.
  • Surge ratings – check the manufacturer’s discharge current and voltage protection characteristics.
  • Backup protection – follow the manufacturer’s requirements for associated protective devices and installation.

Three Phase SPD Installation

Correct SPD performance depends on appropriate device selection, connection arrangement, conductor routing and coordination with the rest of the electrical installation. Installation should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the applicable requirements of BS 7671.

Orders Below £200 + VAT:
To keep costs manageable, we dispatch your order once all items are ready, including products with longer lead times.

Need items faster? You can pay for an additional delivery service to receive in-stock items sooner. Simply email us with your order details, and we’ll send you a payment link for the extra delivery cost.

Orders Above £200 + VAT:
For larger orders, we can split delivery at no extra cost. In-stock items will be sent immediately, with the remaining items dispatched once available.
