Electrical Isolators for Safe Power Isolation

Electrical isolators are used to disconnect a circuit or item of equipment from the electrical supply. They are commonly installed where safe local isolation is required for maintenance, inspection, emergency switching or equipment control.

This category includes switch fuses, main switches, load switches, rotary isolators, TP&N isolators, changeover switches and electrical cut outs. The correct isolator should be selected based on the supply type, current rating, number of poles, enclosure rating and the equipment being isolated.

Choosing the Right Electrical Isolator

When choosing an electrical isolator, check the current rating, voltage rating, pole configuration and whether the unit is suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Some installations may require a fused isolator, while others may require a rotary isolator, main switch or changeover switch depending on the circuit design.

  • Use the correct current rating for the connected load.
  • Check whether single-phase or three-phase isolation is required.
  • Choose a suitable enclosure for the installation environment.
  • Confirm whether fused or non-fused isolation is needed.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and current wiring regulations.

Common Types of Isolator Switches

Switch Fuses

Switch fuses combine isolation with fuse protection and are often used for submains, distribution circuits and equipment supplies where fused protection is required.

Main Switches

Main switches are used to isolate circuits or sections of an installation and are commonly found in consumer units, distribution boards and control panels.

Rotary Isolators

Rotary isolators provide manual switching and isolation for machinery, motors, HVAC equipment, outdoor equipment and commercial installations.

TP&N Isolators

TP&N isolators are used for three-phase and neutral supplies, making them suitable for commercial and industrial electrical installations.

Changeover Switches

Changeover switches are used where a supply needs to be switched between two sources, subject to the installation design and equipment requirements.

Related Consumer Units

Some isolators and main switches are used as part of wider circuit protection and distribution board installations. For complete board options, view our main consumer units range and always check compatibility with the installation design and manufacturer requirements.

Installation Notes

Electrical isolators should be selected and installed by a qualified electrician. The installer should confirm the correct rating, cable size, enclosure type, fault protection, earthing arrangement and isolation requirements before installation.

Electrical Isolators FAQs

What is an electrical isolator used for?

An electrical isolator is used to disconnect power from a circuit, item of equipment or section of an installation so that work can be carried out safely.

What is the difference between an isolator and a switch fuse?

An isolator provides switching and isolation. A switch fuse provides isolation and includes fuses for circuit protection, where required by the installation design.

Can electrical isolators be used outside?

Some electrical isolators are suitable for outdoor use, depending on their enclosure rating and installation method. Always check the individual product specification before ordering.

Who should install an electrical isolator?

Electrical isolators should be installed by a qualified electrician who can confirm the correct product type, rating and installation requirements.
