Single Phase SPD Surge Protection Devices

A Single Phase SPD is designed to limit transient overvoltages and divert surge current away from sensitive electrical and electronic equipment. Surge protective devices are commonly installed at distribution boards and consumer units as part of the overall protection strategy for a single-phase electrical installation.

They can help reduce the risk of damage to equipment such as appliances, lighting controls, heating systems, electronic devices and other equipment vulnerable to short-duration voltage surges.

Type 2 SPDs for Single Phase Installations

Type 2 SPDs are widely used in domestic and commercial single-phase installations to provide protection against switching surges and transient overvoltages associated with indirect lightning effects.

Depending on the installation and supply arrangement, Type 1 or combined Type 1+2 surge protection may be required instead. The correct SPD type should therefore be determined as part of the electrical design.

Choosing a Single Phase Surge Protective Device

  • SPD type – confirm whether Type 1, Type 2 or combined Type 1+2 protection is required.
  • System voltage – select a device suitable for the single-phase supply and installation.
  • Number of poles – check the required protective arrangement for line and neutral conductors.
  • Earthing system – confirm compatibility with the installation’s TN-S, TN-C-S, TT or other supply arrangement.
  • Discharge ratings – check the manufacturer’s stated surge current and voltage protection characteristics.
  • Compatibility – ensure the SPD, backup protection and associated accessories are suitable for the distribution equipment being used.

SPD effectiveness depends on correct device selection, conductor routing, connection length and coordination with the rest of the electrical installation. Surge protective devices should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the applicable requirements of BS 7671.
