RCBO Consumer Units for Domestic and Light Commercial Installations

RCBO Consumer Units are used where individual circuit protection is required within a distribution board or fuse box. Instead of using one or two RCDs to protect groups of circuits, each final circuit can be protected by its own RCBO, helping reduce nuisance tripping and making fault finding easier.

This range includes consumer units supplied with main switches, RCBO devices and selected models with built-in surge protection. The correct board should always be chosen by a qualified electrician based on the installation design, number of circuits, required ways, SPD requirements and manufacturer compatibility.

Why Choose an RCBO Consumer Unit?

  • Individual RCBO protection for each circuit
  • Helps reduce disruption compared with shared RCD protection
  • Useful for modern domestic installations and upgrades
  • Options available with or without Type 2 surge protection
  • Suitable for a wide range of residential and small commercial applications

Main Switch and SPD Options

Many RCBO consumer units are supplied with a main switch incomer. Some models also include a Type 2 surge protection device, commonly used to help protect electrical installations and connected equipment against transient overvoltages.

Always check the product specification before ordering, as the number of usable ways, supplied devices, SPD arrangement and enclosure size can vary between models.

Looking for Individual RCBO Devices?

If you need loose protective devices rather than a complete board, visit our main RCBO circuit breakers category. This includes Type A, B Curve, C Curve, 6kA and 10kA options from a range of manufacturers.

Installation Notes

RCBO consumer units should be selected, installed and tested by a qualified electrician in accordance with current UK wiring regulations and the manufacturer’s instructions. The installer should confirm the required number of ways, protective device ratings, circuit design, earthing arrangement and SPD requirements before installation.

RCBO Consumer Units FAQs

What is an RCBO consumer unit?

An RCBO consumer unit is a consumer unit where individual circuits are protected by RCBO devices. Each RCBO combines overload, short-circuit and residual current protection for its own circuit.

Are RCBO consumer units better than split-load boards?

RCBO consumer units can offer improved circuit separation because a fault on one circuit is less likely to affect other circuits. The correct board type should be chosen by the electrician based on the installation.

Do RCBO consumer units include surge protection?

Some RCBO consumer units include a Type 2 SPD, while others do not. Check the individual product listing to confirm whether surge protection is included.

Can I buy individual RCBOs separately?

Yes. If you only need the protective devices, browse our RCBO circuit breakers category for individual RCBO options.
