Dual RCD Consumer Units
Consumer units, also known as distribution boards or fuse boxes, play a crucial role in electrical installations by distributing electrical power to various circuits and providing protection against electrical faults and overcurrents. In accordance with the 18th Edition of BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations), dual RCD (Residual Current Device) consumer units are commonly used in residential and some commercial installations for enhanced electrical safety. Here are some key points regarding dual RCD consumer units in compliance with BS 7671:
- Residual Current Devices (RCDs): RCDs are electrical safety devices designed to detect and respond to earth leakage faults, which can occur when current flows to earth due to a fault or contact with a conductive surface. RCDs provide additional protection against electric shock and fire by disconnecting the power supply when such faults are detected.
- Dual RCD Consumer Units: Dual RCD consumer units are equipped with two RCDs, typically referred to as RCD 1 and RCD 2. These RCDs provide protection for different circuits within the installation.

This RCD is typically used for lighting circuits and other circuits where a higher sensitivity RCD might be prone to nuisance tripping.
- Circuit Allocation: The allocation of circuits to RCD 1 and RCD 2 should be carefully planned based on the installation’s requirements and the type of loads connected. The goal is to achieve a balance between safety and practicality, ensuring that critical circuits are adequately protected.

- Coordination with Other Protection Devices: Consumer units with dual RCDs should be installed in coordination with other protective devices, such as circuit breakers and surge protection devices, to ensure comprehensive electrical protection.
