Rated Current: Plug-top fuses are available in various current ratings, such as 3A, 5A, and 13A, among others. The rated current of the fuse should match the current requirements of the appliance it is protecting. Using the correct rated fuse is essential for safety.
Fuse Type: In the UK, there are two common types of domestic plug fuses: BS 1362 fuses and BS 1363 fuses. BS 1362 fuses are typically used in non-rewirable plugs (where the fuse cannot be replaced) and are available in various current ratings. BS 1363 fuses are used in rewirable plugs, where the fuse can be replaced. These fuses have a standardized design for ease of replacement.
Fuse Location: Plug fuses are located within the plug itself, typically behind a hinged cover or within a removable cartridge. They are designed to be easily accessible for replacement when needed.
Protection of Appliances: Plug fuses provide protection to individual appliances connected to the electrical supply. They are designed to break the circuit and interrupt the flow of current if the current exceeds the rated value, preventing damage to the appliance or the electrical wiring within it.
