Cable glands, also known as cable connectors or cable entry devices, are essential components in electrical installations. They are used to secure and provide environmental protection for electrical cables as they enter electrical equipment or enclosures. Cable glands come in various types and are designed to accommodate different cable types and sizes. Here are various kinds of cable glands and their common uses in UK electrical installations according to the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671):

  1. Cable Gland Types:

    a. Compression Cable Glands:

    • Use: Compression cable glands create a watertight and secure seal around cables as they enter an enclosure. They are commonly used for outdoor installations and in locations where environmental protection is critical.

    b. Armoured Cable Glands:

    • Use: Armoured cable glands are specifically designed to provide secure entry points for steel wire armoured (SWA) cables. They ensure that the armouring is properly earthed and provide environmental protection.

    c. Non-Armoured Cable Glands:

    • Use: Non-armoured cable glands are suitable for use with non-armoured cables, including flexible cables and cables with PVC or rubber insulation. They are used in a wide range of indoor and outdoor applications.

    d. Exd and Exe Cable Glands:

    • Use: Exd (flameproof) and Exe (increased safety) cable glands are designed for hazardous areas where explosive atmospheres may be present. They prevent the entry of explosive gases or dust into the enclosure.

    e. Metric and PG Cable Glands:

    • Use: Metric and PG (Panzer-Gewinde) cable glands are standardized types used for cable entry. Metric glands are measured in millimeters, while PG glands use a numbering system. They are commonly used in Europe, including the UK.

    f. NPT Cable Glands:

    • Use: NPT (National Pipe Thread) cable glands are often used in North America but can also be found in some UK installations. They provide a tapered thread suitable for sealing and securing cables.

    g. Double Compression Glands:

    • Use: Double compression glands provide an additional level of security by offering two compression seals. They are used in applications where extra protection is required.
  2. Cable Gland Materials:

    a. Metal Cable Glands:

    • Use: Metal cable glands, often made of brass, stainless steel, or aluminum, are suitable for outdoor, corrosive, or high-temperature environments. They provide robust protection and durability.

    b. Plastic Cable Glands:

    • Use: Plastic cable glands are commonly used in indoor installations or in situations where corrosion resistance is not a concern. They are lightweight and cost-effective.
  3. Cable Gland Accessories:

    a. Locknuts and Sealing Washers:

    • Use: Locknuts and sealing washers are used in conjunction with cable glands to secure them to enclosures and ensure proper sealing.

When selecting cable glands for a specific electrical installation in the UK, it’s essential to consider factors such as cable type, size, environmental conditions, and any hazardous area classifications.
