Circuit protection in the UK is governed by the wiring regulations outlined in the British Standard BS 7671. This standard, also known as the IET Wiring Regulations, sets out the requirements for the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical installations in the UK. Circuit protection is a crucial aspect of electrical installations to ensure the safety of people and property.

Here are some key aspects of circuit protection according to BS 7671 and the devices commonly used in the UK market:

  1. Circuit Breakers: Circuit breakers are essential devices for protecting electrical circuits. BS 7671 specifies requirements for the selection and installation of circuit breakers. They come in various types, including:
    • Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs): MCBs are commonly used to protect individual circuits. They trip when there’s an overload or a short circuit.
    • Residual Current Devices (RCDs): RCDs are designed to protect against electric shock. They disconnect the circuit if they detect an imbalance in current, indicating a fault.
    • Combination RCD/MCB Devices: These devices combine the functions of both MCBs and RCDs in a single unit. They are often used for socket outlets.
  2. Fuses: While less common in modern installations, fuses may still be used for circuit protection. They work by melting when there’s an excess current, breaking the circuit.
  3. Overcurrent Protection: BS 7671 requires that circuits are protected against overcurrents. This is typically achieved through the use of circuit breakers, fuses, or other protective devices.
  4. Earthing and Bonding: Proper earthing and bonding are essential for safety. This ensures that in the event of a fault, the fault current is safely directed away from people and property.
  5. Surge Protection: Surge protection devices may be required to protect against voltage surges or lightning strikes, especially for sensitive electronic equipment.
  6. Arc Fault Detection: In certain installations, arc fault detection devices may be used to detect and disconnect circuits in the presence of dangerous arc faults.
  7. Circuit Isolation: BS 7671 also specifies requirements for circuit isolation devices such as switches and isolators.
  8. Cable Sizing: The standard provides guidelines for selecting the correct cable size to ensure that the cables can safely carry the intended load without overheating.
  9. Circuit Labels and Documentation: Proper labeling and documentation of circuits are important for maintenance and safety. BS 7671 outlines requirements for labeling and record-keeping.
